About Side Gig Wire

Side Gig Wire is a free newsletter and website about legitimate extra work: the gigs, the platforms, the pay, and how to get your side gig found online.

Why we exist

Millions of people do some kind of extra work: freelancing after the day job, tutoring on weekends, walking dogs, selling what they make. Almost all of that work is now found online. Even the most offline gig, the one done with a leash or a toolbox, starts when someone searches, scrolls or opens an email.

Most of what’s written for people doing extra work falls into two camps. Either it’s hype (“make $10,000 a month from your couch”) or it’s buried in fine print on the platforms’ own sites. We write the version in between: plain-English news and guides, with the real numbers worked out and the sources linked, so you can decide for yourself.

What we cover

  • Platform news: pay changes, new fees, policy shifts and rule changes from the apps and marketplaces people actually use
  • Getting found: your email list, your social profiles, your posts and reviews: the things that bring customers to you instead of to a platform
  • Practical guides: how to start a specific legitimate side gig properly, and what it really pays after fees and taxes
  • The rules: taxes, platform policies and consumer protection, explained in general terms with links to the official sources

What we don’t do

We don’t make income claims, and we don’t publish anything that asks readers to pay to start earning.

How we’re funded

Side Gig Wire is published by Byte Foundry, which also makes SendingRight, the email and newsletter software this newsletter runs on. We’re funded by:

  • Sponsorships and sponsored posts, including for SendingRight. They’re always labelled “Sponsor” or “Sponsored”.
  • Side Gig Wire Pro, our optional paid tier.

When an article mentions SendingRight because it’s genuinely relevant, the article says that we’re connected to it. If we ever earn a referral fee from a link, we’ll say so next to the link. See our disclosures.
